Update: Problem solved. It seems my internet provider (Plala) blocked all but the most common ports by default. I just had to switch off their firewall and it worked straight away.

I've been having the same issue for a while now, including the latest release (v1.3.0.0).
Turning my firewall/antivirus off has no effect.
Setting up port forwarding for 34002 on my router has no effect.
I have tried deleting everything in the app data folder except wallet.dat and running the app again but it doesn't help.
I should add that after some time (random) it does sync, without me changing any settings. The vast majority of the time I get this error.

I'm signed up for the testnet so I'd like to get this sorted so I can participate effectively!

Here's the code from the debug window:

And it just continues like this.

I replaced my ip with "my ip address" for security reasons.

Also, I thought PoS had now been enabled? Why does it say "Proof of Signature disabled"?

Any help would be much appreciated!

This seems to describe the problem (albeit a different platform). If the devs could take a look it would be appreciated.

    Hi there,

I'm from the Zcash team. We harden some of our boxes, including betatestnet.z.cash with a Linux kernel patch called grsecurity. We noticed today that there was some resource overstepping of memory limits that were resulting in connections being reset for a very small fraction of users, which could potentially be the cause of your problem. The issue has since been resolved. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have tried replacing the peers.dat file with another user's and now it's scanning over 1000 peers, with a similar result:

connect() failed after select(): Connection refused
    trying connection 76.176.106.7:34002 lastseen=23.9hrs

I decided to try connecting by tethering my mobile instead of using my router. To my surprise I was able to make a connection pretty much straight away!

I feel a little stupid, I should have tried this first. I didn't believe my router connection would be the issue as I've never had any issues with it before. Anyway, will still try to find the issue with the router so it may be of help to others in the future. And of course I would rather use my router instead of tethering my mobile!

If anyone has some suggestions of what to do with my router settings etc. I'd love to hear them.

Update: Problem solved. It seems my internet provider (Plala) blocked all but the most common ports by default. I just had to switch off their firewall and it worked straight away.
